Beach House Arvi East
Private Retreat

A secluded beachfront retreat on the south coast of Crete, where stone, timber, water and landscape come together in direct dialogue with the Libyan Sea.
Year: 2022
Location: Arvi, South Crete
Area: 460 m²
Status: Completed

At Beach House Arvi, architecture is not placed against the landscape; it becomes part of it. Hidden on the secluded Meakis Beach, west of the village of Arvi on the south coast of Crete, the residence is shaped by the raw presence of the cliff, the open horizon and the sound of the Libyan Sea.

The project unfolds as a low, grounded composition of stone volumes, timber structures and open terraces. Instead of imposing a singular architectural gesture, the house follows the natural rhythm of the site. Built stone walls, earth-toned plaster, wooden shutters and pergolas create a language that feels familiar, almost archetypal, while large openings and clean interior lines introduce a contemporary sense of clarity.

The outdoor spaces are the heart of the residence. Pergola-covered terraces, shaded seating areas, outdoor dining zones, a pool and direct visual contact with the sea turn daily life into a sequence of open-air rituals. The house is organized around the idea of gathering: long tables, protected lounges, outdoor kitchens and framed views create spaces for shared meals, rest and slow living by the water. The property includes the main house, a guesthouse block and an additional guestroom by the sea, as well as several pergola-covered terraces with dining and barbeque areas.

Materiality gives the project its strength. Stone anchors the building to the slope; timber brings warmth, shade and tactility; glass opens the interiors to the horizon; water extends the sea into the living experience. The contrast between rough and refined surfaces is never decorative. It is a way of making the residence feel both protected and exposed, rooted and open.

Inside, the spaces remain simple and calm. White walls, natural textures, large framed views and carefully selected furniture allow the landscape to remain the main presence. The sea enters the rooms through windows, reflections and light, while the interiors act as quiet shelters from the intensity of the Cretan coast.

Beach House Arvi is ultimately a retreat of elemental relationships: stone and sea, shadow and sun, enclosure and horizon. It offers a form of luxury that is not based on excess, but on privacy, silence, material honesty and direct contact with one of Crete’s most unspoiled coastal landscapes.
