Dual Condition Residence

Residential
A residence in a quiet area outside the city, designed as two independent units that can operate as one unified home in the future.

Year: 2025
Location: Heraklion, Crete
Area: 187 m²
Status: Project

The project is developed on a compact 197 m² plot, located in a quiet area outside the city. The initial requirement was to create two independent residences: a main home for the owner and a second, smaller unit with the ability to operate autonomously, either for private use or rental.

The particular value of the study lies in its dual logic. The two residences operate fully independently in the present condition, with separate circulation and clear privacy boundaries, while also allowing the possibility of being unified into one larger residence in the future.

Due to the limited plot area, vertical circulation is moved outside the main interior spaces. The external staircase organizes access to the upper level and leads to a transitional corridor, which can also function as a quiet library zone. This point becomes the strategic connection between the two residences: through a discreetly designed double-door condition or a future clean architectural opening, the two units can be transformed into one unified living space.

A central role in the composition is given to the large solid vertical element placed between the two residences. This element is not only formal, but primarily acts as a privacy filter. It visually separates the two everyday lives, protects the individual circulation routes and allows the residences to coexist without being exposed to one another.

The glass structure of the staircase and corridor is designed with controlled transparency, allowing natural light while preserving the necessary level of privacy. The central tree, white volumes, exposed concrete elements and black metal details shape a clean yet dynamic architectural composition.

The result is a residence that goes beyond the conventional solution of two independent units. It proposes a flexible model of living, where privacy, coexistence and future adaptability become essential parts of the design.
